The Farm

The current farmhouse at Gadles Farm was built in the 18th Century with various 19th Century details in respect of its windows, doors and stairs. There are records showing a settlement at Gadles since 1327.

Gadles is a Cornish name which contains the elements ‘cad’ and ‘lys’ which translate into ‘battle’ and court’ and can be interpreted as indicating a high status defended place such as a motte and bailey or hillfort.

The newly converted Pascoes cottage is marked on maps of the farm dating back to 1880, as does the west wing of the cowshed which is now Foxglove cottage.

Gadles is still a working farm extending to 100 acres of land, all of which is used to grow grass. The farm is home to a prize winning herd of pedigree Ayrshire dairy cows and their milk is used locally to make the now world famous Roddas Clotted Cream.
